From our Head of College

I would like to welcome you to British College Yangon. The College will open in September 2017, offering a contemporary British independent school education, located in Myanmar’s commercial capital, Yangon.

Our school will offer a friendly, student-centred learning environment on a state-of-the-art campus. We will combine academic excellence with a holistic approach to education through our focus on music, sport, the arts and community service; what we like to think of as a blend of Eastern rigour and Western balance.

Management of the College is overseen by Dulwich College International (DCI) with the prestigious Dulwich College in London acting as educational adviser. The College will also be part of the Dulwich College International family of eight international schools across Asia.

Our shared ethos is a simple one: our students come first. We believe in inspiring the children of today to become confident global citizens who have the courage and integrity to seize life’s opportunities.

We achieve this through placing equal emphasis on our students’ intellectual and personal development, encouraging them to embark on a journey of discovery to find where their individual skills lie. We show our students how to learn and think independently, using our long experience as educators to nurture their different interests and learning styles.

I do hope you enjoy reading this short introduction to British College Yangon and discover how we can offer an all-round education that will allow your children to seize the possibilities of tomorrow.

We are always delighted to meet with parents and their children to explain more about the College, so please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange an appointment.

Learning

British College Yangon will open in September 2017 offering classes from pre-Nursery to Year 8 (2 – 13 years old). In each subsequent year we will open an additional year group until we have a fully-fledged Senior School with classes up to Year 13 (age 18).

The College will offer a high quality international education that blends the best approaches from Eastern and Western traditions, one that is firmly rooted in academic rigour yet invested in developing the individual and embracing extra-curricular activities. The curriculum in our Early Years (ages 2-7) and Junior School (ages 7-11) will follow an enhanced English National Curriculum (ENC), designed to meet international and local requirements. There will be a strong emphasis on the application of technology and modern foreign languages, especially Mandarin and Burmese.

Our aim is to ensure that all the children in our care are happy, confident and enthusiastic learners. We provide an appropriate and balanced academic challenge that enables student to realise their unique potential in a supportive environment.

Our youngest students will engage in topic-based learning, a cross-curricular approach that integrates different subject matter under an umbrella topic/area of interest.

We will offer a stimulating a creative curriculum that gives students autonomy, allowing them to take responsibility for their learning. Our regular assessments will track student progress to ensure that every child achieves to the best of their abilities.

In the Senior School (ages 11-18), our students will continue to follow the enhanced ENC in Years 7-9, leading to IGCSE courses and examinations in Years 10-11. In the final two years we intend, subject to the necessary approvals, to offer students a challenging international, academic qualification which is fully recognised by, and gives access to, top-class universities worldwide.

Our academic provision will be enhanced by opportunities for collaboration with the Dulwich College International schools. Students and staff from British College Yangon will be able to participate in learning exchanges, sporting competitions, music concerts, and art exhibitions with their peers from across the Dulwich network. Our College will also benefit from the international partnerships with leading universities organisations shared by the Dulwich family of schools.

We encourage our students to be confident individuals, with the skills to seize the possibilities of tomorrow.

Our Heritage

Dulwich College International is overseeing the management of British College Yangon.

The Dulwich College International (DCI) education group was established to bring the Dulwich education to students around the world. In doing so, Dulwich has pioneered the introduction of British independent education overseas. DCI has grown rapidly since its foundation in 2003 into a family of schools embracing the same core values and practices – one College, many campuses.

This shared ethos is derived from Dulwich College in London. Founded in 1619 by Edward Alleyn, a colourful and famous figure in Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre, Dulwich College is one of the oldest independent schools in England.

Over the centuries, Dulwich College has produced visionaries celebrated in every generation, including the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, writers P.G. Wodehouse and Raymond Chandler, and actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. Dulwich also includes leaders

of industry, renowned scientists, musicians, actors, politicians, international sportsmen, a Governor of the Bank of England and eminent members of the judiciary amongst its alumni.

For the past 10 years DCI has established a proud heritage of bringing the Dulwich College traditions of academic excellence, personal growth, etiquette and well-rounded social skills to over 6,000 students across campuses in Shanghai, Beijing, Suzhou, Seoul, and Singapore, and International High Schools in Suzhou and Zhuhai.

Innovation is at the core of the Dulwich ethos. It has driven us to offer the highest standards of British independent education across Asia.

British College Yangon is privileged to
have over 8 hectares (20 acres) of greenfield land on the south-eastern edge of
Yangon. The campus is purpose-built with world-class academic and co-curricular
facilities. Our school is located within the Star City residential development
and will be a focal point for the community, with the school’s facilities
available to the public outside of school hours.

Every detail of our campus’ contemporary design has been
carefully considered to create an enriching, stimulating environment that
inspires learning and participation. The campus is divided into 5 distinct
areas with separate buildings specifically designed for the Early Years (Pre-K
to Year 2), Junior School (Years 3-6) and Senior School (Years 7-13) students.

We will have a sports section incorporating rugby and football fields,
gymnasium and aquatic centre with an Olympic-size 50 metre swimming pool. To
complete the picture, there will be a performing arts centre and an art and
design building.

These facilities are positioned within a fully landscaped campus,
providing an attractive natural environment for the students to enjoy.
